Double hung windows, sometimes called sash windows, often bring older homes to mind. That’s understandable. In particular, they appear frequently on Federation and character-style properties across coastal New South Wales. But the practical advantages they offer go well beyond aesthetics. Even so, they’re worth considering in a wider range of homes than many people realise.
At Windows & More Australia, we supply and install aluminium double hung windows. We service the Central Coast, Newcastle, and the Hunter region.
How Double Hung Windows Work
A double hung window has two panels that both slide vertically within the frame. The bottom panel slides upward to open from below. The top panel slides downward to open from above. You can open both at the same time.
In fact, opening both panels together is where the practical advantage becomes clear. Warm air rises and exits through the top opening while cooler air draws in through the bottom. For bedrooms and living areas, that kind of passive ventilation is genuinely useful through summer. A standard sliding window gives you airflow or no airflow. A double hung, however, gives you considerably more control over how air moves.
What Sets Them Apart From Other Window Styles
Above all, opening from the top is the key feature that separates double hung windows from most other styles. It’s also more useful than it might first sound.
In children’s bedrooms, for example, you can keep the bottom panel closed and latched while opening the top. That provides ventilation without a low opening near the floor. In bathrooms and wet areas, a partially open top panel lets moisture escape without exposing the space. In living rooms, similarly, a small top opening keeps air moving on mild days without throwing the room wide open.
For parents with young children, that combination of ventilation and controlled access is genuinely valuable in everyday use.
Double Hung Windows and Period Homes on the Central Coast
There are a good number of older character homes across the Central Coast, from Federation cottages through to post-war bungalows. Many of them originally featured double hung windows. As a result, replacing them with a modern sliding or awning style can work against the feel of the home.
Instead, aluminium double hung windows retain the original proportions and vertical window lines. They also eliminate the ongoing maintenance that comes with timber joinery. Aluminium handles salt air, UV, and coastal humidity significantly better than timber. It doesn’t need sanding, painting, or sealing on any regular basis.
For homeowners renovating older properties, double hung aluminium is generally the most considered choice. It lets the windows look appropriate to the home rather than like a cost-saving substitution.
Contemporary Homes and Renovations
Double hung windows also suit newer builds and contemporary renovations well. The vertical panel format works particularly well in rooms with higher ceilings. In addition, the clean lines of a modern aluminium frame sit comfortably alongside current architectural styles.
In two-storey homes, first-floor bedrooms can open from the top for ventilation. The lower panel, meanwhile, stays closed and latched for security. Other window styles don’t offer that same combination.
A Few Practical Things to Know
The sliding channels and tracks of a double hung window benefit from periodic cleaning. Additionally, dust and debris can build up in the channels over time and affect how smoothly the panels operate. Fortunately, regular window cleaning takes care of this and doesn’t require any specialist maintenance.
Some double hung configurations also allow the panels to tilt inward for glass cleaning from inside the home. That’s a particularly useful feature in second-storey installations. If you’d find this useful, mention it during the quote visit. We’ll confirm availability in the product you’re looking at.
Fly screens and safety barrier screens work with double hung window frames. We fit them at the time of installation.
Colour Options
Double hung windows come in the same powder-coated colour range as our other aluminium window products. For period homes, heritage colours including off-whites, creams, and classic greys work particularly well. They suit the character of older properties without looking out of place. For newer builds and contemporary renovations, charcoal, monument, and black are among the most popular frame choices. Our team can help with colour selection during the measure and quote visit.
